## Five findings

1. ### More than half the money went to model labs.
The 131 companies in Models and labs raised $170B of the $323B total. 81% of that went to Anthropic, xAI and Project Prometheus.
2. ### Money grows faster than deal count.
Startups raised $103B in 2025 versus $49B in 2024 (+109%), while the number of rounds grew only 20%. Q1 2026 brought 6.4x as much money as Q1 2025 on almost the same number of rounds.
3. ### Voice agents, robotics and Legal AI grow fastest.
By number of rounds in 2025, the leaders are voice agents (+59%), robotics (+41%) and work assistants (+35%). By money, voice agents lead (+625%, more than 7x), followed by Legal AI (+423%). LLMOps (−2%) and customer support (+8%) lag behind.
4. ### The market is the US, San Francisco and Y Combinator.
The US has 52% of the companies and 75% of the money, and San Francisco alone is home to 1,121 of the startups. Y Combinator is the most frequent investor in 19 of 20 use cases; in Models and labs, it is NVIDIA.
5. ### Hardly anyone discloses revenue.
Revenue figures turned up for only 30 companies, $76B combined, and 86% of that is Anthropic ($65B a year). Next come Cursor ($4B), Mercor ($2B) and Cognition ($900M).

// Method

## Methodology and caveats

### Sample

The sample is 10,803 AI startups founded since 2020, taken from Crunchbase; 7,740 of them fall into the 20 use cases. A company can belong to several use cases, so use-case totals overlap.

### Funding data

Funding data runs through June 12, 2026, so 2026 figures are partial. The 2026 bars in “Raised by year” are drawn in a fainter tone for that reason.

### Revenue

Revenue is what companies reported publicly (ARR, run-rate or revenue). Each figure links to its source and shows the month it was reported.

### Growth chart scale

Bars in the growth chart stop at +300%; their labels show the full value.
